The Madeira Hummingbird (Eulampis jugularis) is recognizable by its dark, rather black plumage, with emerald green or golden green reflections on the wings and tail. Its head is black, as is its long, down-curved beak. If the male is larger than the female (0.31 - 0.42 oz / 9 - 12 grams versus 0.24 - 0.35 oz / 7 - 10 grams), the female's longer, more curved beak has adapted to her diet. The male namely essentially feeds on a species of Heliconia with a short, straight corolla - which he defends against all intruders, including the female - while she takes nectar from flowers with long, curved corollas.
