Born in Granville in 1905, Christian Dior grew up in a wealthy bourgeois family. His grandfather, Louis Jean Dior (1812-1874), founded the “L. Dior” chemical fertilizer company and produced the “Saint-Marc” washing powder and “Dior” bleach. His father perpetuated the tradition, but bad investments and the crisis of 1929 ruined him. Passionate about gardens, Dior's mother had pines and windbreak hedges planted to protect the jasmines and other fragile flowers. The garden of Les Rhumbs is among the rare artists gardens from the early 20th century that have come down to us.
