A facade inspired by Italian palaces

0
Originally located on Place de l'Annonerie-Vieille, the town hall of Aix-en-Provence moved next to the clock tower in the 14th century, in the years following the reunion of the Saint-Sauveur episcopal district and the county town. Its facade, inspired by Italian palaces, displays five windows per floor. Each floor is separated by a frieze, one with triglyphs and rosettes on the ground floor and another cut with winding foliage on the first floor. The facade was stripped of its other ornamentations during the Revolution. Its wooden entrance door is framed by two double Doric columns connected by an entablature that supports a wrought-iron balcony and opens onto an interior courtyard.
