Flourishing in the 19th century, the ocher market collapsed in the first half of the 20th century before regaining relative strength in 1957 thanks to a fashion photographer. Today, the incomparable natural qualities of ocher maintain it in the fields of art, crafts and construction. Of the four major French deposits - Ardennes, Bagnères de Bigorre, Burgundy and Vaucluse - only that of Gargas in Vaucluse is still exploited.
