There are sixteen species of cicadas in the French Mediterranean area, including three endemic to Corsica. Among them, the gray cicada (Cicada orni) is one of the most common in Provence and the noisiest. Although it is part of the summer soundscape and despite its size of 1.2 to 1.5 in (3 to 4 cm), it is still very difficult to see on the bark of trees thanks to its excellent camouflage.
