The Pic du Midi is one of the two International Dark Sky Reserves in France. The region in which this exceptional site is located attracts 1.5 million visitors a year and includes a UNESCO World Heritage Site (the Pyrénées-Mont Perdu site) and a French national park, the Pyrenees National Park. Research on the region, the use of its territory, tourism economic models, and the resource sustainability are undertaken at the University of Pau and Pays de l'Adour. The university has also appointed a team responsible for the Dark Sky Reserve project and the installation of scientific equipment necessary to monitor the quality of the night sky in the future.
