Thanks to the establishment of a European program for endangered species, the population of wild European bisons (Bison bonasus) now numbers 1,800 individuals, i.e 400 more than that of captive bisons. The reintroduced individuals nevertheless suffer from isolation and experience inbreeding problems and an irreversible loss of their genetic diversity.
