Before reaching the outskirts of the city of Béziers and its famous 9 locks of Fonséranes, the Canal du Midi crosses the town of Colombiers. This commune in the Hérault department is also traversed by the Via Domitia, an ancient Roman road built in 118 BC. It aimed to connect Rome to the Iberian Peninsula, crossing Narbonne Gaul. Colombiers now has more than 2,400 inhabitants and is, with its marina, a popular stopover on the cruise along the Canal du Midi.
