A 15th century fortified gateway

In Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, in the Puy-de-Dôme, the belfry gate is the last of the three medieval entrances to the village. In the 15th century, the town surrounded itself with ramparts and built a square belfry above this gate. The right-angled entrance, which can be locked by a portcullis, has been preceded by a barbican with a baffle plate which protected the gate. The tower has a spiral staircase and several rooms. At the end of the 16th century, the gate was raised by a turret and a bell lantern, topped by a wolf’s head weathervane. After the Revolution, the belfry was abandoned and rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century.
