A church on the Old Port

Saint-Ferréol les Augustins Church is located on the Old Port of Marseille, at the crossroads of Rue de la République, Quai du Port and Quai des Belges. It was built between 1447 and 1588 by the Augustines monastic order near the port, in an area then occupied by the galleys arsenal. It was consecrated in 1542 when Pope Clement VII accompanied his niece Catherine de Medici, newly married to the Duke of Orléans. Initially far from the old town of Marseille, Saint-Ferréol les Augustins Church found itself in the center of the new urban area following the extension of the city ordered by Louis XIV in 1666.
