In Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt in the Vaucluse department, the Saint-Étienne parish church bears the republican mentions (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) that usually appear on the pediments of the town halls. Located opposite the village's town hall, the church is among the hundred or so French churches - mostly in the south of the country - to bear the motto of the French Republic. These mentions appeared on some churches as early as the Revolution of 1848, when they were adopted by the Second Republic. In Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, they were added in 1905 after the separation of the Church and the State that entrusted the management of the churches to the municipalities.
