A massive and richly adorned church

The massive and vast Saint-Firmin church of Gordes was built in the 18th century to replace the medieval church, which had become too small. It has a four-bay nave, ends with a canted apse, and its facades are punctuated by high irregular buttresses, the one of the entrance gate facing east and blending into the dense urban fabric of the village. The church has four side chapels on its south facade and three on its north side. Its imposing interior was enriched in the 19th century under the influence of Canon Isnard who marked the forty years of his ministry with an ambitious decorative campaign with oil paintings and the acquisition of rich ecclesiastical furniture.
