A church damaged during D-Day

The three-bell tower and spire of Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Secours Church in Saint-Marcouf dominate the coastal hamlet of Les Gougins in the Manche department. This 19th-century neo-Gothic building replaced a chapel dedicated to the protection of sailors during the reign of Louis XIV. The church consecrated in 1856 was severely damaged during the D-Day battles of June 6, 1944, and its facade and bell tower had to be rebuilt. It still hosts an annual pilgrimage with the blessing of boats on the beach on September 8, the feast day of the Nativity of the Virgin.
