Notre-Dame-des-Anges Church (Our Lady of Angels) in Collioure is one of the city's main symbols. The monument is unlike any other as it rises from the base of an old lighthouse to which a bell tower and a dome were added in 1810. Sainte-Marie Church, the first church of Collioure, stood on the site of the primitive city, within the very enclosure of the Royal Castle. It was razed when the town was redesigned by Vauban and replaced by Notre-Dame-des-Anges on land donated by Louis XIV.
