At the start of the 16th century, Troyes was the cradle of a renowned school of painting, sculpture, and stained glass. Churches in the town and its surroundings hold dozens of masterpieces. The Vauluisant Museum in Troyes displays remarkable sculptures, such as the Virgin of Villenauxe, and paintings of the Pensive Christ and the Virgin in the Red Mantle. The museum also shows stained-glass windows from the Hôtel de l'Arquebuse by master glassmaker Linard Gontier.
