A rapid but underperforming digestion
1
0
The digestive process of the elephant is rapid but not really efficient. The stomach has a limited contribution in the digestion that mainly takes place in the caecum. The digestive system, poor in intestinal flora and bacteria, allows the digestion of only 40% of the food supply. The elephant releases more than half of the plant matter in the form of thick dung, i.e more than 220,46lbs (100kg) of dung per day.
