Created on July 13, 2007, the Chastreix-Sancy National Nature Reserve covers an area of 1,894.5 hectares (7.31 sq. miles) in the volcanic massif of the Monts Dore, located to the West of the Puy-de-Dôme department and in the centre of the Massif Central. Contiguous on part of the ridges to the Sancy massif (photo) with the Chaudefour valley Nature Reserve, it is one of the four national nature reserves in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park.
