Orschwiller, below the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg, has remained a predominantly Catholic village, although several Protestant families settled there after the Reformation. During the Thirty Years’ War, the Swedish army burnt the original church and destroyed the village (1633). The church of St. Maurice was quickly rebuilt in 1660 and finally replaced by a larger church in 1779. The statue of the Virgin of Langenberg is still preserved in a niche in the present church. Dating from the 17th century, this small polychrome wooden statue depicts Mary giving a kiss on the mouth to the infant Jesus.
