A laurel crown on the ground

0
Around the sarcophagus of the Emperor Napoleon I, the floor consists of a mosaic of marbles. First a golden yellow star with 72 rays, then a crown of green laurels with purple ribbons. Closest to the Finnish quartzite sarcophagus, a black marble circle bears the names of Napoleon’s eight greatest victories: Rivoli, Pyramids, Marengo, Austerlitz, Jena, Friedland, Wagram and Moscowa. The sarcophagus is set on two pedestals of green Vosges granite and measures 4 metres long and 2 metres wide. It consists of a vat and a lid. Napoleon lies in five coffins nested inside each other.
