An impressive water colour
Scientists, geologists and writers have long sought to unravel the many mysteries surrounding Lake Pavin, whose water colour has bemused generations of observers. Almost midnight blue on a clear day thanks to the reflection of the sky into the water, it darkens to black and causes fear in stormy weather because of its great depth. Hence the name ‘Pavin’, from the Latin ‘pavens’ meaning appalling.
