A constellation of white headstones

On 6 June 1944, Allied troops landed in Normandy, thus marking the beginning of Europe’s liberation. The toll of the Battle of Normandy however is frightful: the Allies’ casualties overall accounted up to 37,000 dead and 172,000 wounded. In 1947, the historic site of Omaha Beach was selected for the construction of a permanent cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. The architecture of the cemetery is defined by the perspective effects created by the constellation of impeccably aligned white headstones over an immense green carpet.
