A concession in perpetuity from France to the USA

Located between the municipalities of Colleville-sur-Mer and Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, the Normandy American Cemetery is oriented East-West. It overlooks Omaha Beach and the Channel over its entire length (of approximately 1 km), covering an area of 0,27 sq. miles (70 hectares). The cemetery’s territory is a concession in perpetuity from France to the United States, being the customary practice for all military cemeteries relating to the two World Wars. The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) looks after the cemetery with great care and respect.
