The municipality of La Trinité occupies the eponymous bay on the North Atlantic coast of Martinique. It is located opposite the capital, Fort-de-France, from which it is about nineteen miles (30 km) away. The town's origin dates back to 1658 when it was part of a community of six municipalities (Le Lorrain, Sainte-Marie, Le Marigot, Le Gros-Morne, Le Robert, and La Trinité) nicknamed Capesterreo. It broke away from the community following the creation of a parish in the center of the three – hence its name Trinité – neighborhoods of Petit Brésil, La Citerne, and Rue Paille. Subsequently, the cultivation of cocoa, cotton, and sugar cane enabled La Trinité to develop commercially.
