A colony founded by Ionian sailors
1
0
Twenty-six centuries ago, the Calanque du Lacydon was adopted by Greek navigators to set up a colony they named Massalia. This site, chosen from the sea for the protection it offered both from the sea and from the enemies, reflects the concerns and logic of the Phocean sailors from Ionia. They founded the city-state of Massalia around the current Vieux-Port (Old Port) and lived there in a small Greek enclave in the middle of Gaule, resisting tensions with the neighboring Celto-Ligurian tribes.
