A hill with numerous attractions

Converted into a garden during the 19th century, Castle Hill offers a remarkable panorama appreciated by the wintering aristocracy and greeted by Napoleon III, one of its first visitors, in September 1860. The sunrise over the port of Nice and the sunset over the Baie des Anges and the Promenade des Anglais has earned the site its nickname cradle of the sun. The historical and archaeological richness of the five acres (2 ha) park rivals the landscaped attractions of the deciduous and coniferous rock vegetation that colonized the hill as well as with its waterfall, fed by the water of the Vésubie thanks to a canal completed in 1887. The site is accessible by an elevator leaving from the foot of the hill at Rauba Capeu or by climbing some 500 steps leading from the seaside to the Bellanda tower.
