Destroyed during the siege of the city by the armies of the Prince of Condé in August 1636, the initial bell tower of the collegiate church Notre-Dame of Dole was designed by Hugues Sambin (1520-1601). This Franc-Comtois artist remains a characteristic figure of the Renaissance through the variety of his centers of interest and the extent of his talents. A carpenter, sculptor, hydraulic engineer, architect, decorator and engraver, he had a lasting influence on the ornamental repertoire of his time. The current bell tower of the western tower of the basilica takes up the four pinnacles surrounding Hugues Sambin's bell tower anchored in the collective memory thanks to the drawings of the local artists.
