A rich and diverse statuary

The expression of Gothic art is at its height in Reims Cathedral. More than 2,300 statues are scattered around its interiors and its external structure. Those adorning the main facade used to be polychromatic and formed a rich liturgical collection composed of kings, saints, apostles, and angels. Christ and the Virgin Mary are omnipresent in the monument but mingle with anonymous figures. Many of Reims Cathedral's statues are smiling, which constitutes a major innovation in religious iconography at that time.
