In 1381, due to lack of space, the Metz council decided to install its belfry in the south tower of Saint Stephen Cathedral. A 2,425 lbs (11 ton) bell was melted and called the Mutte. In the Middle Ages, it was not a liturgical bell but a civil one. Its F sharp key sounded in case of attack, council meeting, or execution. A quadripartite stained-glass window decorated with three roses adorned the tower's summit. It was also decorated with pinnacles to fit better with the rest of the Gothic facade of the cathedral.
