Pont-Audemer was born where the crossing of the river was easiest. Between two arms of the Risle, the ancient Gallic city extends naturally at the crossroads of the Risle and the Roman road connecting Lisieux to Lillebonne. The town, first known as Duos Pontes then Pons Audomaris, quickly became an important crossroads for trade in the region. The brotherhood of tanners settled there, and their leathers made the reputation of the city during the Middle Ages. At that time, half-timbered houses typical of Normandy flourished along the canals.
