At the foot of the Rocher de la Baume, which rises over almost 2,624 ft (800 m) opposite the citadel of Sisteron, passes a road formerly used by Napoleon. On March 5, 1815, the Emperor, returning from the island of Elba, took this road - which now bears his name - on the way to the great epic which was to allow him to regain power during the episode of the Hundred Days. The citadel of Sisteron could have stopped him, but its twenty-three cannons deprived of powder let Napoleon, forced to abdicate in 1814, and his 1,200 soldiers pass.
