Standing in the Baie Saint-Michel, the eponymous islet emerges from the lacustrine landscape of Serre-Ponçon, of which it constitutes the emblematic figure. Born in the Hautes-Alpes department from the construction of a dam first operated in 1961, it corresponds to the top of the rocky outcrop on which stood Saint-Michel chapel. Located just above the 780m coast that constitutes the maximum water level of Serre-Ponçon, the chapel is today surrounded by the immensity of the lake.
