Ceramics essential on the Gallo-Roman tables

Ceramics, and particularly sigillata, imposed themselves on the Gallo-Roman tables. From the time of the Roman conquest, the production of ceramics increased considerably while the food tastes changed towards more wine and cereal-based porridges. Roman dishes in terra rubra and nigra (red and black) were quickly imitated in Gaul. A large number of table objects have been found during excavations in Alesia. Since they wore out quickly (the earth quickly giving a taste to the food) and because the potters were very productive, ceramic dishes were, indeed, easily thrown away.
