A major archaeological cavity

The Caune de l'Arago is a cavity located 1.86 miles (3 km) from the village of Tautavel in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. In its heart, excavations of a major archaeological site have been held since 1964. The Caune de l'Arago was filled with sediments in the Quaternary era, the most recent geological period in which man appeared. The study of the layers of sediments allows visualizing the climatic variations of the southern Corbières and Roussillon between 700,000 and 100,000 years. Among the bone remains found in the Caune de l'Arago are those of large mammals accumulated by humans.
