Elsewhere considered a defect in the glass, the bubbles are deliberately created at the Verrerie de Biot in the Alpes-Maritimes department, of which they have become the signature feature. Controlling the melting temperature of the glass or inserting sodium grains between two layers of glass causes irregular bubbles that can be stretched during a subsequent blowing. To obtain regular bubbles, the master glassmaker can use, on the first picking, a spiked mold to form depressed areas in which the air bubbles persist during the second picking.
