The Natura 2000 program seeks to ensure better consideration of biodiversity issues in human activities. Madine Lake and its surroundings are under its supervision. With more than 250 species observable on its waters, it is also classified as an “Important Area for the Conservation of Birds” (ZICO). The preservation of the aquatic grass beds that cover the lake is also essential for its wildlife. They serve as food and egg-laying support for fish as well as for birds. Madine Lake's area is home to 10% of the Lorraine region's flora.
