A basilica in two parts

Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde Basilica in Marseille is made up of two parts of very different styles: a low and sober church that contains the vaulted crypt dug directly into the rock and a high church richly decorated and adorned with numerous ex-votos forming a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The nave in the upper part is 107.2 ft (32.7 m) long and 45.9 ft (14 m) wide. It is bordered by side chapels 12.4 ft (3.8 m) by 17.7 ft (5.4 m) each. The powerful 134.5 ft (41 m) high square bell tower with a belfry surmounted by a terrace and a campanile offers a massive pedestal to the golden statue of the Virgin Mary.
