Le Barcarès in the Pyrénées-Orientales department is a renowned seaside resort with a marked regional identity. This small strip of land surrounded by a pond and the sea was abandoned until the 16th century. A fishing village settled there at that time and developed a major fishing port and a shipyard from which were built Catalan boats. In the 1960s, the town was transformed into a seaside resort whose symbol is the wreck of the Lydia, stranded on its beaches. Now converted into a museum, nightclub, and restaurant, the boat is the fourth oldest liner in the world.
