Made up of the two distinct sites of Vieux Salins (photo) and Salin des Pesquiers, the coastal area of the Salins d'Hyères, in the Var department, has been recognized and protected for the exceptional character of its avifauna since the 1970s. It represents both a transit area of major importance for many migratory birds and a breeding and wintering site. In 2014, among the 298 bird species identified during the thirteen years of ornithological monitoring, 51 were nesting, 138 wintering, and 259 were migratory birds, with some species cumulating several statuses.
