A functional architecture based on local materials

The architectural priority of the Haras National du Pin, whether it was for the central castle or the stables, was given to the use for which its various buildings were intended. Materials from the region were used for their construction: the white limestone stones of the castle are Caen stones extracted in Falaise; the red bricks of the stables were made in a former brickyard located on the road to La Cochère, as was the glassware for the windows; and the tiles were produced in a tile factory in Silly-en-Gouffern. As for the wood, it came from the Chantepie farm sawmill.
