An architecture adapted to the tropical climate

The maison principale (main house) of Habitation Clément, which served as a residence for the master of the sugar estate, has been adapted to the tropical climate of Martinique. Its designers used all the tricks known in the middle of the 19th century to combat heat and humidity. Protected from the sun by the trees of the park, the mansion is sheltered from humidity by its elevation on a terrace and its facades made of small pieces of rot-proof tropical wood. The air circulation is ensured by side galleries pierced with numerous jalousie windows designed to ensure a constant flow of air inside the building. As for the rooms on the ground floor, they are wide open to each other and have no door that could hinder the passage of the trade winds.
