Traces of human occupation dating back to 2,500 BC. were found on the territory of the locality of Cuers, in the Var department. Subsequently, the Ligurians and Romans established various camps and an oppidum at the top of the Barre de Cuers. The property of the Count of Fréjus during the Merovingian period, Cuers was given to Count Guillaume II of Marseille around 973, as a reward, for having fought and expelled the Saracens. He then gathered the population and had a castle built on the hill where Notre-Dame de Santé currently stands. The Count of Marseille also erected fortifications and a church, laying the foundations of the current village.
