Since the 5th century, the Jura has always been a land of wood craftsmen, sometimes in addition to agricultural activities. The regions of Saint-Claude, Moyans, and Oyonnax are fertile in boxwood ideal for woodturning. The craftsmen logically chose it to create religious objects, rosary pearls, spoons, flutes, and whistles. Some cities have persisted in the woodturning craft such as Dortan, the capital of chess games, and Saint-Claude, known for its pipes. The family workshop of Robert Marichy has been established in Arinthod for three generations.
