A former watchtower rebuilt identically

The redoubt of Ballestras in Palavas-les-Flots was built in 1743. Mainly defensive, it was gradually forgotten and later converted into a water reservoir. In 1991, the old watchtower was deconstructed stone by stone to make way for the current Phare de la Méditerranée (Mediterranean lighthouse) and rebuilt identically in the heart of the Étang du Levant (Levant pond). The decision to rebuild this historical vestige in the pond was taken by Christian Jeanjean, the mayor of Palavas-les-Flots at the time.
