Also known as La Rose islet, Madame islet extends near the eastern coast of Martinique in the Baie du Robert. This islet of volcanic formation with an area of approximately 7 acres (2.9 ha) is covered with lush vegetation. Its highest point rises to 98 ft (30 m) above sea level. In the mid-1970s, it underwent earthworks at its western beach to allow the construction of bungalows for tourists. These works revealed Amerindian artifacts (shells of Lobatus gigas collected around the islet, shards of ceramics, lithic tools, remains of food, etc.) testifying to an ancient occupation of the islet prior to European colonization.
