Vasio or Vasio Vocontiorum, now Vaison-la-Romaine in the Vaucluse department, was the capital of the Celtic people of the southern Voconces in the 1st century BC. Defeated by the Consul Fulvius Flaccus in 125 BC, then by Sextius Calvinus a year later, the Voconces rallied to the Roman Republic. As a reward for its loyalty to Rome, Vasio became a federated city upon the creation of the Provincia in 120 BC and was granted significant autonomy. The ancient city whose vestiges are visible on the archaeological sites of Vaison-la-Romaine was mainly organized during the 1st century BC.
