Forcalquier extends at an average altitude of 2,135 ft (651 m) in the western part of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence between the Lure mountain and the Luberon massif. The sixth largest city in the department of southeast France, this small agglomeration of 5,069 inhabitants was founded in the 11th century. Once the capital of a flourishing county of which it retains a rich architectural heritage, Forcalquier is today a mere local administrative center.
