During the breeding season, the Common Crane (Grus grus), though gregarious at other times, becomes territorial. After reaching the far north of the Eurasian continent, the pair nests alone in wetlands and woodlands, or on an islet for better protection from predators. There, it finds an abundance of food, consisting of plants – seeds, cereals, herbs, berries, roots and stems of aquatic plants – and small animals – birds, eggs, rats, reptiles. Cranes also eat insects, molluscs, small crustaceans, fish and amphibians.
