The Mountain Law of 1985, specified and extended by that of April 14, 2006, introduced the possibility of a fee for the use of a skiing area for cross-country skiing. The revenue from the collected fees amounts to around ten million euros per season when snow conditions are normal. It notably allows local governments to bear the high cost of securing, maintaining, and tamping the trails.
