Underground splendour
The water table going down to more than 1968ft (600m) deep has dug in the subsoil of Makatea innumerable caves and galleries which extend the holes and chimneys abandoned by the CFPO (French Phosphate Company of Oceania) at the end of the exploitation of the phosphate deposit. Makatea retains all its underground splendour.
