Underground basilica from 4th century

Did you know that Rome has 66 catacombs? That they account for hundreds of kilometres of underground tunnels in which about 7 million people were buried? The catacombs of Domitilla were built in the 3rd and 4th century AD and rediscovered in 1593 by the archeologist Antonio Bossio who got lost in its 17-kilometer long tunnel system for 3 days!
Today, only 6 are open to the public and in this photo you see the underground basilica of Domitilla. Built in the 4th century and dedicated to holy martyrs entombed in its apse, many religious groups celebrate mass here.
